Choosing the Right Fire Extinguisher for Your Home
Not all extinguishers work on all fire types — using the wrong one can make things worse.
Understand the fire class ratings
Extinguishers are rated for specific fire types: Class A (ordinary combustibles), Class B (flammable liquids), and Class C (electrical) — a multi-purpose ABC-rated extinguisher covers all three.
One per level is a good baseline
Most fire safety experts recommend at least one extinguisher per level of the home, with an additional one near the kitchen where cooking fires are most common.
Size matters for usability
A 5-10 lb extinguisher is generally manageable for most homeowners; larger units offer more capacity but can be difficult to operate under stress.
Check the pressure gauge regularly
Most home extinguishers have a gauge indicating charge level — check it periodically to confirm it's still in the operable range.
Know when NOT to fight a fire yourself
If a fire is spreading beyond its starting point, filling the room with smoke, or you're unsure you can extinguish it quickly, evacuate and call emergency services instead of continuing to fight it.
